I find that Hebrew is so different from English that even good and faithful translations leave a lot behind in order to make a fluid translation. So reading in Hebrew is like seeing the text in living color, rather than in black and white. And this is even true for beginning students! for instance, Psalm 23 in English says that "Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life", which is a good and true translation.But it's pretty bland. The word translated "follow" has a sense of intense pursuit in Hebrew, and is frequently used of a hunter pursuing prey or an army in pursuit of an enemy. The psalmist David is portraying God as a hunter who is intensely pursuing him, with goodness, mercy and loyal love, all through his life. What a vivid , encouraging and comforting image! and it doesn't have nearly the impact in English.
